Summer camps are a great US tradition, like baseball and apple pie. Their roots are heavily planted in the East Coast. Actually, the first summer camp began in Connecticut in 1861. 1 Currently, San Diego, CA (California) is ranked as the most popular city for camps.
So, six years ago, when I had the idea to have a summer camp experience for 9—13yearold nonUS kids with English as a second language, I had my homework cut out for me. The winner was Orange County, California! Why? 2
★I needed nice weather all the time. And it's Orange County with average high temperatures ranging from 21℃ to 29℃， and there are not very many days of rain. 3
★Cities in Orange County, CA are often on the list of the top 100 safety cities in the US. So, where is our camp? You guessed it! 4
★I know when you hear “Southern California”， your first thought isn't “English”. However, the native speakers of English here speak it well. 5 The English is basically “accent less”， which means students from other countries will understand and learn it well, and all teachers are certified to teach English as a second language, which is a big win for all of us.
So, there you have it. I have no doubt that our students are too!
