The birthplace of Brazil's first world champion of surf, Maresias is best known for its mix of powerful waves. Located about 100 miles east of Sao Paulo, the capital of Brazil, Maresias became a holiday destination for Brazilians in the 1990s. The thick rainforest that previously made it less accessible, however, is also one of its selling points.
