1．情态动词的意义和用法
(1)can，could
①表示能力，意为“能；会”，can表能力时意味着凭体力或脑力或技术等可以无阻力地去做某件事。could为can的过去式，表示过去的能力。
?By the time she was five, she could read English.
她五岁时就能读英文了。
?You never know what you can do till you try.
直到你尝试过，否则你永远不知道自己能做什么。
②表示请求或许可，在疑问句中，could可以代替can，不是过去式，只是语气更委婉，但回答时都要用can。

③表示惊讶、怀疑等，常用于否定句和疑问句中。
