if, whether
if作“是否”解时，可用以引导间接疑问句，但一般它只能引导宾语从句。与whether相比，它多用于口语，而它引导的从句一般也不与连词or或or not连用。如：
I don’t know if he studied English before. 我不知道他以前是否学过英语。
I wonder if it is the right thing to do. 我不知道是否应该这样做。
whether作“是否”解时，用以引导间接疑问句，从正反两个方面提出疑问。具体用法如下：
1）引导宾语从句：常可与if互换，但比if正式。如：
I don’t know whether he is right. 我不知道他是否正确。
I wonder whether he will come by train or by bus. 我想知道他是坐火车还是乘汽车来。
I don’t know whether he is back or not. 我不知道他是否回来。
2）引导主语从句。如：
Whether they’ll carry out their promise remains to be seen. 他们是否能履行诺言尚须拭目以待。
3）引导表语从句。如：
The question is whether he is able to finish the work in time. 问题是他是否能按时完成这项工作。
4）引导同位语从句。如：
Let us consider the question whether we are going to take these measures. 让我们来讨论一下，我们是否要采取这些措施。
5）引导让步状语从句。如：
Whether it rains or not, I’ll go there tomorrow. 不管下不下雨，我明天一定要到那里去。
注：当whether引导宾语从句而用if代替whether时，有时可能会引起整个句意的含混。例如：如果我们用if来代替Please write to tell me whether I am to come back ahead of time.（请写信告诉我是否应该提前回来。）一句中的whether，那么这句话必然会出现两种解释：①if引导的是宾语从句，意为：请写信告诉我是否应该提前回来；②if引导的条件状语从句，意为：假如我应该提前回来，请写信告诉我好了。
